The relocation of Basildon Market to St Martin’s Square has made way for the development of South Essex College’s state-of-the-art digital technology college on the market’s former site in Market Pavement. The relocation of the market coincides with significant improvement works to the paving and general look and feel of St Martin’s Square.
We have a £30 million 10-screen cinema development with six food and beverage units set to open in the town centre soon, with flagship restaurants, Orletto, Kaspa’s and Nando’s already providing a warm welcome to customers. And with our partners in the BasildON consortium we have secured nearly £2 million of funding for the development of arts and culture right in the heart of Basildon.
In March 2023, Basildon Borough Council was awarded £4.4m from the government’s Cultural Investment Fund to turn empty properties, including the old Robins Cinema, in the town centre into a creative facility for screen and immersive digital industries. The project will help support businesses and freelancers working in the film, TV, gaming, VFX and animation sectors.

Basildon Borough boasts three major high street retail centres: Basildon, Billericay, and Wickford. Within Basildon town centre it has the Eastgate (with over 100 shops & services) and Westgate Shopping Centres. Established retail parks - Mayflower and Pipps Hill - has been joined by the new St Hilary’s Retail Park in 2022, with retail and restaurant offerings.
